phonography - field recording - sound art

Along with straight forward audio work for film and video, I make field recordings purely for the enjoyment of sound. Towards this end I participate in these groups:

The Nature Sound Society, based in Oakland, California, USA, is dedicated to the appreciation, preservation, and recording of natural sound. In addition to organizing field trips and workshops, the NSS is working with the National Park Service to assist in the documentation and preservation of natural soundscapes.

Phonography.org is a website dedicated to sound gathering, which is also being called phonography (literally, "Sound Writing"). What the camera is to photography, the tape recorder is to phongraphy. Tape Recorder? That's so "old school"!

The site grew out of a mailing list which discusses ideas, equipment, and opportunities to present work to a larger audience. You can purchase an attractive T-shirt, and the proceeds will go to maintain the website.

Phonography.org has released several compilation CDs, some of which I have contributed to. These CDs were produced by Dale Lloyd and may be purchased via his and/OAR record label.

The Phonographer's Union is a loose collective of sound recordists who gather to create improvised compositions using unprocessed, unedited field recordings, interweaving the natural with the artificial and the familiar with the strange to focus attention on sounds that may otherwise be ignored.

Both novel and familiar sounds are juxtaposed in a way unique to each performance. Our intent is to move our listeners beyond our habitual experience of sound in order to enrich our collective experience of sound and thereby of the world in general.

Our minimal website contains snippets from past performances. One of these performances was broadcast live on KEXP Radio, recorded for posterity, and is available for purchase from Accrections.

The CD got a nice review from Allmusic.com. See the Accrections website for additional reviews.
